I've found it really useful reading all the posts about foot surgery. I'm waiting to see the surgeon about bunion and toe next to the big one, which is v shaped with a huge hard lump on it. As well as the pain from this, my feet have lost much of their flexibility and are very sore. I have had new supportive soles made, had a mold made for between my toes and got some silicone cushioned toe wraps and given in and ordered boots from a specialist extra roomy shoe supplier, but nothing is really helping. The top of my toe feels like someone is driving a red hot screw driver into it with any pressure on it Anyone got any other advice for how to manage wearing shoes in the meantime? Thanks, Ailsa xx

Hi Ailsa, Sorry you`re suffering - these poorly feet are so annoying. I have something similar, only it`s caused by my little toe on my left foot "wandering" underneath the next one along, which has a red angry lump on the top similar to what you describe. I understand the red hot screwdriver feeling! The lump on my toe became a nasty corn, so I have my feet done every week by my podiatrist, who checks and dresses the toes if need be. I find the silicone moulds a bit uncomfortable,to try to keep the little toe from wandering, and have the gel protectors for the sore toe. I also bought some chiropody felt for extra padding, and at the moment I`m wearing my roomiest shoes, which are Rieker shoes, so nice soft leather. I know I will have to go down the surgery route - already been told this - but for the moment we are managing it with the help of my wonderful podiatrist, who is very good at her job. Good luck, Kathleen x

hi Ailsa,
just wanted to say sorry you're suffering at the moment, there are some good make's of shoes around i like Fly Flots, and i found Shuropody nice as well, although as i have a weird big toe .. lol, it has always tilted slightly upwards from my youth i hang on to wearing mule's as long as i can, as shoe's really push down on my toe .. the one thing that has given me is lovely straight feet, no bunions etc.
Kathleen has given good advice, my feet hate the cold i get a bit of Raynauds in the toe's which go a nice shade of purple in this weather.
good luck and let us know how you get on,
Suzanne x

Thankyou Kathleen and Suzanne - good to have some 'sole-mates'! As I have been blessed with HUGE feet, as well as downright awkward, horror movie feet, I am really limited with shoe options. For the past few months, I have only really been comfortable in crocs, although they offer no support and I wouldn't be able to wear them at school The ones I ordered from Cosyfeet are certainly not 'lookers'! Velcro closing ankle boots - the saving graces were that, 1) they are enormous and I was able to glide into a size 8 (an achievement for me!!) and 2) they are purple! As I can't hide feet this size and shape, I may as well have a colour that makes me happy. Sorry you too know the screwdriver sensation Kathleen. Your podiatrist sounds wonderful! Mine is also great but getting a 3-4 month appointment is as good as it gets. I'm going for an ultrasound on my bad ankle the week after next so it sounds like things are moving quickly - I will keep you posted. xx Ailsa

Finally had my appointment with the ortho surgeon yesterday. I'm going to have my big toe joint fused and toe straightened and the second toe joint removed and toe shortened. he said he can't promise pain free feet for anyone with RA but he can definitely sort the toe pain, which gets me down. Once that's all sorted, I can have the right foot done!
Would like to hear from anyone who has been there and done that ... xx Ailsa

Hello Ailsa If you go into surgery thread, 2nd page and 4th from bottom.......you will find my ramblings re foot surgery. Had left foot bunion & hammer toes June 2012. Wish you all the best with your op. Everyone's experience is different, I've had knee replacement February last year. In no rush to have anymore surgery! Jane Xxxx

Hi Ailsa, I've had both big toes operated on, one is great the other not as good. Two different surgeons. As Jane said, everyone's experience is different, but even the not so good toe is much better than it used to be. Good luck Gogs

Hi Ailsa Li am just recovering from having my bunion sorted out and hammer toe fixed, which meant having a joint removed. It was done on New Years Eve and I went back to work on Monday. It has been OK although the first night was painful and I didn't spread out the painkillers properly so I ended up in the early hours needing some but having to wait. That is a mistake I won't make again. My other foot was done last May. The important thing is lots of rest afterwards and keep it up as much as you can. Good luck Sue
